ST 1.2

Bluffton Elementary students are given multiple opportunities to work in collaborative groups and work independently during the day.  Some of these occur during the related arts of Science, robotics and gaming.  The students are paired for Science experiments and given directions but not the expected outcome.  Working together, the students use the scientific method to determine the results.

Students work independently and collaboratively in an inquiry-based learning environment that encourages finding creative solutions to authentic and complex problems.

For robotics and gaming, the teachers serve as facilitators and help guide the student groups through an elaborate design for coding and for building a robot.  In all classrooms teachers push students to create or think using inquiry.  For example, “what if”, “if, then” and “why” questions are posed to have students expand on their thinking.  Often, work may begin independently with students working alone to begin a project, but then becomes collaborative as they share with others to help critique for changes.   

The Early Childhood Center has been introduced to Stop Motion animation this year to build a foundation for animation in the main building.  The students are working on simple animations to learn the basic steps and movements.  The projects will gradually get harder as they move from kindergarten skills to 1st grade skills. 

Turkey Disguise


K/1 students were given the task to help turkeys find a way to keep from becoming turkey dinner on Thanksgiving. The students decided to create a disguise for their turkeys so no one would realize who they were.

Bluffton Elementary Students adopt Twin Oaks Elementary

After the devastating floods in Louisiana, our students decided to assist flood victims by hosting a supply drive for Twin Oaks Elementary.  During this service learning project, our students collected school and household supplies and shipped them to Twin Oaks Elementary.
