Fourth Grade

ELA- Students will be working toward learning various reading skills that will help them comprehend fiction and nonfiction grade level texts. These skills include finding key elements in a story which will help students understand the central idea, theme, and author's perspective. Students will be able to apply their knowledge of reading to their writing skills and learn how to incorporate their critical thinking skills to refine their knowledge and ideas of a topic

Math- Students focus on developing a strong understanding of place value and number operations, including multi-digit multiplication and division with larger numbers. They work on mastering fractions, including equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, and adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators. Students also explore decimals to the hundredths place, learning to compare and perform operations with them. Geometry skills include classifying shapes by their properties and understanding lines, angles, and symmetry. Additionally, they learn to interpret and represent data using graphs and solve problems involving measurement and conversion of units. Throughout these topics, emphasis is placed on reasoning, problem-solving, and applying math concepts to real-world situations.

Science- Students will explore how energy causes changes in motion that can be observed, described, and measured. They will learn that water, sound, and light waves can transfer energy without transferring matter, explaining how these waves transmit and receive information. Students will examine the internal and external structures of organisms that support life, growth, and reproduction. They will also investigate natural hazards and geological events, recognizing their impact on human history and populations. Through hands-on experiences, students will interact with maps to understand Earth's features and systems, making observations and measurements related to weathering and erosion caused by water, ice, wind, or vegetation. Overall, this year will be filled with interactive learning that deepens their understanding of science concepts.

Social Studies- Students will engage in an in-depth exploration of key social studies topics that have shaped the history of the United States. Through a combination of inquiry-based learning, research, and critical thinking, students will build a strong foundation of historical knowledge and develop meaningful connections to the content. Major units of study will include Colonization, The Formation of a New Nation, Westward Expansion and Sectionalism, The Civil War, and Reconstruction. By the end of the year, students will be able to identify and analyze significant individuals, events, and themes related to these eras. Additionally, they will examine the role and contributions of South Carolina within each historical context, deepening their understanding of both national and state history.
