School Counselor
The Beaufort County School District utilizes the South Carolina Comprehensive and Developmental Guidance and Counseling Program Model to promote and enhance the learning process and facilitate student development in three broad areas; learning to live (personal/social development), learning to learn (academic development), and learning to work (career development).
School counselors help students build bright futures.
Each school in the district K-12 is staffed by at least one fully certified school counselor. Email Ms. Yates or Ms. Michaels with your questions or concerns, or call 843-706-8500.
My name is Michaela Yates, and I have had the privilege of being a School Counselor at Bluffton Elementary School for the past 21 years! I have lived in Bluffton since 1990 and attended Beaufort County Schools from 6th grade through high school. I graduated from Clemson University with my Master’s of Education in School Counseling and came right back to Bluffton because I am a low country girl at heart and love living here! I am an avid animal lover and spend my free time volunteering with local groups that rescue and raise orphaned wildlife.
I believe that our job as educators is to teach the whole child. Children need to learn not only reading, writing, and arithmetic, but also to have integrity, responsibility, and strong character. We need to teach them how to think, rather than what to think. Within these walls we have the opportunity and obligation to help these students grow into successful adults that are able to contribute positively to society. No one person can accomplish that in isolation. It takes a team of people coming together in support of these children to help them reach their potential. I truly believe in what George Evans said, “Every student can learn, just not on the same day, or the same way.” It takes everyone working together to say, “these are our students and their success matters.”
Please feel free to reach out to me for anything concerning your child – I am here to help anyway I can! I truly love my role at our amazing school, and I look forward to continuing to support our students for many years to come! I can be reached by email at Michaela.Yates@beaufort.k12.sc.us, by phone at 843-706-8500, or you can just come by the school! If it’s first thing in the morning, you’ll find me at the front door greeting our wonderful students with a fun puppet! 😊
