BLES is excited to be in the third year of its Young Ladies of Bluffton Club (YLB). In 2014, this group was initiated because two girls asked why the boys had a Young Men of Bluffton group but the girls did not. They were persistent with the teachers and administrators which prompted a team of leaders within the school to meet with the Young Men of Bluffton team leader for ideas on how to start a group for the girls. Since that moment, the club has grown and flourished, and this year will be its largest participation rate yet.
YLB is a group of 4th and 5th grade girls who meet each week with teachers to discuss and participate in a variety of activities connected to PRIDE. Our goal is to help the girls build self-esteem and develop strong character. Lessons include topics such as “Girl Power” to build confidence and break the stigma of what girls can and cannot do.
One important component to YLB is a connection to the community. The girls help lead fundraising activities for the school by advertising their causes and collecting items. For example, they made posters promoting box top collections and counted them out to raise money for the school. The girls also helped lead a fundraising project for Operation Christmas Child, a project a run by Samaritan’s Purse that provides gifts and treats to underprivileged children around the world. They made flowers for Mother’s Day and passed them out at morning car riders. The girls also represent BLES in the community by participating in the Bluffton Christmas Parade alongside the Young Men of Bluffton.
Guest speakers of YLB have included student-athletes from Bluffton High School who discussed balancing sports with academics and Lisa Sulka who discussed her role as the first female mayor of Bluffton.
Young Ladies of Bluffton Club meets Tuesdays from 2:45 – 3:40. You can spot them on Tuesdays dressed up and wearing their signature pink scarfs!
